1968 383 Formula 'S'
|
The barracuda underwent a major change in 1967. The Chrysler engineers were going for an
Italian GT look, and they did a pretty good job. The fastback model was retained as the
'Sports Barracuda'. There was also a new hardtop and convertible model. (Ed. - Personally the
fastback barracudas from 67-69 are the best looking cars to ever come from Chrysler.)
The 67 barracuda was haralded by Car and Driver® as "Unquestionably the best
looking car out of detroit in 1967". There were a few cosmetic changes from '67-'69, but nothing
major. The '67 barracuda
kept the same engine options from the previous year, but the Formula 'S' gained a new addition,
the 383 Magnum. It was a true engineering feat to get the big block stuffed under the hood,
and until later in 67 when a new power steering unit was designed, none of the 383 barracudas
had power steering. The HP was also reduced due to the confined exhaust. That also changed in
later years. In 1968 the 340 replaced the 273 hipo motor as the base engine in the formula 'S' package.
And that combination made an excellent performing car.
There were a few (Ed. - 50 I believe) Hemi barracudas built by Hurst® in 1968 for racing
only. In 1969 there was a new 'Cuda' model which was available with a 340, 383 or 440.
