1964 Plymouth Sport Fury |
In each of the three years, '63, '64, and '65 there were significant body changes, but the general body
lines were the same, so they are all included here.
In 1963 the belvedere line went through a complete redesign over the previous year, and gone was the wild
look with a more conservative, clean look adopted. The same 116 inch wheel base was retained, but the
cars were 300 pounds lighter. Combined with the Super Stock 426 (426 Max Wedge) the plymouths were all
but unbeatable at the drag strip, especially if they were factory light weight cars. Times at the
quarter mile were down in the low 12's and even the 11's with factory cars.
In 1964 there was a significant body style change, primarily with front end and the roof line. Of
more importance, was the introduction of the Stage III Super Stock 426, and then later in the year,
the Race Hemi was made available. This was the start of the legendary history of the 426 Hemi. In 1965,
yet another set of body changes were made, refining the look just a little bit more. In '65 the fury
line of cars was moved up to the C body class of cars, and the Satellite was introduced. Which was a
high level trim package. (Both interior and exterior). In 1964, the pontiac GTO was introduced, which
is regarded as the first of the true muscle cars. While the mopars could run circles around any of the
GTO's the mopar designers wouldn't get a performance styled car to match the performance for a couple
of years still.
